The 2010 recipient of the NCDLA/William L. Rodgers Educational Scholarship is Ty Alan Green. Ty, a dental laboratory technology student at Durham Technical Community College, was presented this award on Saturday, March 19^th at the 2010 NCDLA Spring Educational Meeting, held at the Beach Cove Resort in N. Myrtle Beach, SC. “Dental Technology is a fascinating and broad field that will greatly utilize my talent, my love for scale models and painting, and my attention to detail,” he said. After graduation, Ty plans to become a Certified Dental Technician and would like to someday open his own dental laboratory.

The NCDLA/William L. Rodgers Educational Scholarship, established by the N.C. Dental Laboratory Association (NCDLA), was created to provide assistance and encouragement to a worthy student in the Associate Degree Dental Laboratory Technology curriculum at Durham Technical Community College in Durham , NC .  This merit-base award is valued at $1750 and is presented annually.

This scholarship is named in honor of “Chief” William L. “Bill” Rodgers, CDT, retired Program Director of the DTCC Dental Laboratory Technology Program, in recognition and appreciation of his outstanding contributions in the education of dental laboratory technicians.

Scholarship History:       

The NCDLA annually awards a scholarship to a second year Dental Laboratory Technology Student at Durham Technical Community College (DTCC) in Durham, NC.  The concept of establishing a scholarship was presented by the present of Durham Technical Institute, Dr. H. K. Collins, when he addressed the membership on May 6, 1966 .  He suggested that the NCDLA establish a scholarship for a resident of NC who would attend the DTA Dental Laboratory Program.  (DTI was later named DTCC).  The scholarship records are very vague, but we know that the scholarship was re-established by the NCDLA in 1992 and is administered by the NCDLA Scholarship Committee and the NCDLA Board of Directors.  The scholarship was originally called the NCDLA Educational Scholarship.  It was renamed in 1994 to the NCDLA / William L. Rodgers, CDT Educational Scholarship.  This was done in honor of “Chief” Bill Rodgers, who served as director of the Dental Technology Program for over 26 years and retired in the spring of 1994.
